Tripura Legislative Assembly Speaker and four-time MLA BiswaBandhu Sen passes away

He was 72 years old. Sen, a BJP leader from the Congress, is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
The Tripura government has declared three days of state mourning from Friday as a mark of respect for the departed leader.
The state government has also decided that all government offices, Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and educational institutions, including those located outside the state, will remain closed on Friday.
The Tripura government has announced that a state funeral will be accorded to Biswa Bandhu Sen on Saturday, December 27.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Health Minister and BJP President JP Nadda, party National Working President Nitin Nabin and other leaders expressed grief over Sen’s death.
Taking to his official X account, PM Modi tagged his photo with Sen in Agartala and said: “Pained by the demise of Shri Biswa Bandhu Sen Ji, Speaker of the Tripura Assembly. He will be remembered for his efforts to promote the progress of Tripura and his commitment to numerous social causes. My thoughts are with his family and admirers at this sad hour. Om Shanti.” Biswa Bandhu Sen ji, Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, devoted his life to public service, worked closely with the people and made valuable contributions to the progress of Tripura. The state has lost a determined leader whose services will always be remembered with deep respect. I offer my sincerest condolences to his family, friends and fans.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, senior-most minister Ratan Lal Nath, Leader of Opposition (LoP) and CPI (M) Tripura State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury, Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly Ram Prasad Paul, Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman and many other leaders expressed deep shock and sorrow over Sen’s death.
In a social media post, the Chief Minister said: “I am deeply saddened by the demise of Hon’ble Speaker of Tripura Legislative Assembly, Bishwa Bandhu Sen. His untimely demise is an irreparable loss to the people of the state. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family members and followers. I pray to God Almighty for eternal peace of the departed soul and strength to his family to overcome this difficult time.”
The Prime Minister later told the media that Sen discharged his responsibilities as Speaker of the House efficiently and conducted the proceedings of the House with fairness and exemplary competence.
Speaker Sen, who underwent emergency surgery at a private hospital in Agartala after suffering internal brain haemorrhage on August 8, was taken to Bengaluru for better medical treatment on August 11.
Sen was elected to the Tripura Legislative Assembly four times; twice in 2008 and 2013 as a Congress member from Dharmanagar constituency and later twice in 2018 and 2023 as a BJP candidate from the same seat.
