A Georgia man shot and killed two police officers who were questioning him at a hotel who invited him to his room on Sunday, killing one and seriously wounding the other, according to authorities.

The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Kevin Andrews of Decatur, was also shot by one of the officers during the incident, Gwinnett County Police Chief J.D. McClure said at a news conference.

Andrews was transported to the hospital for medical treatment and is expected to survive. Once he is released from the hospital, he will be transported to the county jail.

The shooting occurred Sunday morning near Stone Mountain, about 40 kilometers northeast of Atlanta.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a statement that two officers responded to a Holiday Inn Express in South Carolina after a caller reported that someone had fraudulently used his credit card at the hotel. The agency said officers spoke with the front desk clerk, who advised that the room was rented by Andrews.

After learning Andrews had an active warrant out for his arrest in DeKalb County after he failed to appear for a hearing, officers went to his hotel room to arrest him, according to the agency.

The suspect greeted officers at the door of his room and invited them inside, McClure said.

“They started discussing the scenario or the plot with him,” McClure said. “And at one point, the suspect pulled out a handgun and fired at our Gwinnett County police officers in an unprovoked attack.”

The officers were identified as Pradeep Tamang and David Reed, the chief said.

25-year-old Tamang died in the hospital where he was taken due to his injuries. He joined the police force in 2024.

Reed was hospitalized in serious but stable condition Sunday afternoon. He joined the department in 2015.

Gov. Brian Kemp said he “mourns the loss of one brave officer” and “prays for the speedy recovery of another.”

“This is the latest reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers face on a daily basis, and we are grateful to all those who put themselves in harm’s way to protect their fellow Georgians,” Kemp said on channel X.

Andrews is charged with one count of premeditated murder, one count of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault on a public safety officer and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The ongoing investigation is being led by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which traditionally handles officer-involved shootings in the Peach State.

Once the investigation is completed, the case will be turned over to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for review, the agency said.
