9 killed, 80 injured after bus carrying marriage party overturns in Jharkhand’s Latehar

At least nine people, including five women, were killed and more than 80 people were injured when a bus carrying wedding guests overturned in Jharkhand’s Latehar district on Sunday, January 18, 2026, police said.

The accident took place in Orsa Bangladara valley under Mahuadanr police station limits.

Superintendent of Police Kumar Gaurav said, “A bus carrying a marriage party was coming from Chhattisgarh’s Balrampur district for a wedding at Mahuadanr in Latehar. The bus overturned and five people died on the spot. Four of them were women. The injured were taken to hospital.” PTI.

Another official said two people died during treatment at Latehar hospital and two at Gumla Sadar hospital.

Gumla civil surgeon Shambhu Nath Choudhary said nine injured people were shifted to Sadar hospital, two of whom died.

In a post published on X, Chief Minister Hemant Soren asked the Latehar Deputy Commissioner to provide proper medical facilities to the injured.

Sub-District Magistrate (SDM) Vipin Kumar Dubey said 60 injured were admitted to Mahuadanr community health centre, while more than 20 were admitted to a private hospital.

“Thirty-two people who are serious are being referred to RIMS Ranchi for better treatment,” he said.

The identities of the deceased were stated as Reshanti Devi (35), Prema Devi (37), Sita Devi (45), Sonamati Devi (55), Sukhna Bhuiyan (40) and Vijay Bhuiyan. Mr. Dubey said that efforts are on to identify a woman who died at Latehar hospital.

Bus driver Vikas Pathak said there were around 90 passengers on the bus.

“The brakes of the bus failed. Although I tried to stop the vehicle with the handbrake and turn off the engine, I could not maintain control and eventually the bus overturned,” he told reporters.
