BIG move by Indian Army, as it steps up winter operation after intel warns about 30 Pakistani terrorists active in Jammu

Denying seasonal slowdown, the Indian Army has expanded its operational scope to snow-covered and high-altitude regions since the start of Chillai Kalan on December 21.

Jammu region currently faces a significant terrorist threat; intelligence agencies estimate that more than 30 Pakistani terrorists are operating in the region. The Indian Army responded by intensifying counter-terrorism operations during Chillai Kalan, a 40-day harsh winter period, to prevent terrorists from taking advantage of adverse weather conditions.

Change in terrorist tactics

Defense and intelligence sources say that facing increasing pressure from continuous operations, terrorists have settled in high and middle mountain areas in Kishtwar and Doda, where civilian presence is minimal. This shift is seen as an attempt to evade detection and regroup during the winter freeze, traditionally considered a period of low activity for terrorist operations.

Army’s approach

Denying seasonal slowdown, the Indian Army has expanded its operational scope to snow-covered and high-altitude regions since the start of Chillai Kalan on December 21.

Forward winter bases and temporary observation posts were established to maintain uninterrupted pressure on terrorist hideouts even when temperatures dropped below freezing. Army patrols carry out regular sweeps along ridges, forests and remote valleys to deny terrorists any safe haven.

Multi-agency coordination

The operations are being carried out in close coordination with Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, Special Operations Group, Forest Guards and Village Defense Guards. Intelligence inputs are jointly analyzed to map the terrorist movement and plan targeted operations with minimal delay. Security agencies believe that declining local support and increased attention in low-lying areas are forcing terrorist groups into isolation.

technological advances

Specially trained winter combat units have been deployed in sensitive sectors, supported by drones, thermal cameras and ground sensors to monitor movement across snow-covered terrain. Surveillance and search operations are ongoing to ensure that cleared areas remain under surveillance.

The focus this winter is on eliminating remaining terrorist groups and preventing regrouping, officials said, sending a clear message that adverse weather conditions could no longer provide protection to Pakistan-backed terrorists operating in Jammu and Kashmir.
