Golden Boot winner Harry Grant gives Eliesa Katoa update as Kevin Walters pushes for Kangaroos extension

Grant, who had enjoyed a 3-0 rout of England throughout October and November, made a call for Australia’s World Cup coach to eventually take over, with Kevin Walters remaining unsigned beyond the Ashes series.

The Queensland Maroons hooker felt for such a huge display on home soil, the Kangaroos needed enough time to plan whether they would lift the silverware for the 13th time; It’s a luxury that hasn’t been afforded to Walters and his team since the former Brisbane Broncos mentor was only confirmed on a three-game deal in late July.

Walters has a close relationship with several Kangaroos players, including attacking center Kotoni Staggs, who suggested he would confirm a transfer to Australia rather than Tonga if he remained in charge.

Head prop Tino Fa’asuamaleaui is also yet to decide whether he will represent Australia or Samoa at the World Cup; Walters was sure to “support him in every way, no matter what path he chooses” but had not yet spoken to him about his intentions.

“I think everyone’s backing Kevvie, if they give him the opportunity now he can start planning. We’ve got the World Cup, it’s a huge thing and Australia are a prestigious team to play for,” Grant said.

“Now let’s put some things in place, let some people plan and take enough time to make this the best World Cup possible. I really liked how Kev brought us together quickly and really coached us to bring our strengths to the table.”

Walters confirmed on Friday that he had not yet begun extension talks with Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V’landys and NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo but expected those talks to take place in the new year.

“Obviously I want to continue coaching Australia, it’s been a great start on the international stage and next year’s World Cup in Australia makes perfect sense. But we’ll get through Christmas, enjoy it and look forward to 2026 being even better,” Walters said.

“I think the most important thing is building a really good relationship with the players, letting them be who they want to be and letting them express themselves the way they want to play. “That’s my biggest asset as a coach, my connection with the players and giving them the space to play their own style of football.

“Am I a better coach now than I was 12 months ago? Yes definitely, but we’re always improving. Santa brings a lot of joy, delivers a lot of presents, so hopefully it’ll be a little gift for Kevvie Walters.”
