After the Delhi High Court directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to consider objections filed by the parents of Ashoka Chakra award winner Late Major Mohit Sharma, the Board conducted a fresh review of the film Dhurandhar and found no connection with Major Mohit Sharma.
This reassessment was carried out in accordance with the Court’s decision dated December 1, 2025. According to the CBFC’s latest notification, the Board rejected the family’s objections and concluded that the film bore no resemblance to Major Sharma’s life, service or experiences.
In its fresh review, the CBFC authorities examined the specific question framed by the Supreme Court as to whether the film in any way directly or indirectly depicts, resembles or derives from the life of Major Sharma. The bench stated that Dhurandhar was a work of fiction and had no real or biographical connection with the officer.
He also noted that the film contains an explicit disclaimer explaining that all characters, events, and stories are fictional and are not related to any real person, living or dead.
The internal memo also notes that the Review Committee viewed the film on November 28, 2025, and found it suitable for adult certification with certain excisions or changes.
Following the court’s directive, authorities re-examined the matter but found no basis to change their previous decision. CBFC reiterated that the film does not reflect Major Sharma’s life in any way and remains within the scope of fictional storytelling.
During the Supreme Court hearing, Advocate Ashish Dixit, appearing on behalf of CBFC, informed the Court that the certification process was ongoing and the Board was currently examining the objections raised by the petitioners. The court observed that the CBFC may refer the matter to the Indian Army if necessary before completing the certification. However, in its new deliberation, the Board concluded that such a reference was not necessary because the film did not depict or resemble any actual Army officer or actual military operation, making expert consultation from the Army unnecessary.
This development comes after a detailed exchange of views in the Court during the hearing of the petition filed by Major Sharma’s parents seeking to block the release of Dhurandhar.
Justice Sachin Datta asked the petitioners’ counsel how the claim was made that the film was based on the life of Major Sharma and noted that only the trailer was available and no material bearing an uncanny resemblance was brought on record. While considering the petition, the Court directed the CBFC to take into account the family’s concerns before finalizing the certification process.
The petitioners had claimed that the film was promoted as “inspired by true events” and that its story reflected aspects of Major Sharma’s personality, operations and sacrifice. They alleged violations of his dignity, posthumous privacy and personality rights, and expressed concern about the portrayal of sensitive Special Forces missions. The filmmakers, represented by Senior Advocate Saurabh Kirpal, argued that the petition was premature and misunderstood and reiterated that the film was pure fiction and had no connection with Major Sharma.
With the CBFC’s new assessment completed and the objections rejected, the certification process is expected to proceed in accordance with the relevant guidelines. Dhurandhar is a Hindi spy action thriller film directed by Aditya Dhar and starring Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, R. Madhavan and Arjun Rampal. It is scheduled to be released in theaters on Friday, December 5. (With inputs from ANI)
