Warning against the artificial intelligence boom, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that no company will remain unscathed if artificial intelligence collapses. Speaking to the BBC, the IIT technocrat said the current wave of AI investment is an “extraordinary moment”. Admitting that there were “elements of irrationality” in the market, he warned of “irrational exuberance” similar to that experienced during the dotcom era. Expressing confidence that Google can weather the storm, he said, “I don’t think any company, including us, can be immune from this situation.” This is quite significant considering that Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has been on the rise on the stock market, with the price of its shares increasing by 60%. This was because investors were confident in its ability to compete with ChatGPT maker OpenAI.

Alphabet artificial intelligence investment

Alphabet has pledged to invest GBP 5 billion over two years in AI infrastructure and research in the UK. It will include a new data center and investment in London-based artificial intelligence lab DeepMind. Sundar Pichai also said that Google will start model training in the UK. Earlier, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer hoped such a move would strengthen the country’s bid to become the world’s third AI “superpower” after the US and China. But Alphabet’s CEO also warned of AI’s “enormous” energy needs and said Alphabet’s net zero targets will be delayed as it ramps up computing power.

Gemini chatbot

It is worth noting that since May, Google has added an “AI Mode” to its search using the Gemini chatbot. It aims to give users the experience of talking to an expert. Google’s consumer artificial intelligence model Gemini 3.0 is expected to be released soon. Warning that artificial intelligence is currently prone to errors, Pichai said, “We are proud of the amount of work we have put in to give us as accurate information as possible, but current state-of-the-art artificial intelligence technology is prone to some errors.” he said.

artificial intelligence explosion

He also said: “We can look back at the internet right now. There was obviously a lot of investment, but none of us question whether the internet is deep or not. I expect artificial intelligence to be the same. So I think there are elements of both rationality and irrationality at a time like this.”
