Google launches Nano Banana 2, updating its viral AI image generator

Google On Thursday, it released Nano Banana 2, an update to its wildly popular AI image generator.

The company launched the first Nano Banana in August, and the service quickly went viral. Nano Banana Pro launched in November, built on the Gemini 3 Pro.

Google said: blog post Nano Banana 2 has advanced world knowledge by receiving real-time information from Gemini for more accurate renderings. The company also highlighted the new model’s increased speed, improved instruction tracking, and more precise text creation for “marketing mockups or greeting cards.”

The company said the Nano Banana Pro will remain available for “high-quality tasks requiring maximum literal accuracy,” while the Nano Banana 2 will focus on “the foundation of rapid production, precise instruction following, and integrated visual search.”

Nano Banana 2 replaces its predecessor in Gemini’s Fast, Thinking and Pro models.

AI image and video creators are gaining popularity among consumers, who can create increasingly sophisticated and detailed graphics and videos with just a few text-based commands. OpenAI launched its video creation tool Sora in 2024, and CEO Sam Altman wrote last March that high usage was “melting” AI processors.

Adobe has sought to further integrate AI into its suite of creative tools with photo and video creator Firefly.
