Government investing ₹6,000 crore in substations to meet future power demand in Andhra: Minister Gottipati

Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar informed the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, March 5, 2026, that the government has invested around Rs 6,000 crore in the construction of substations as part of efforts to strengthen the power distribution network in Andhra Pradesh.

Replying to MLA Aditi Vijayalakshmi Gajapathiraju’s question regarding the construction of 220/132 kV substation at Venugopalapuram in Vizianagaram district, the Minister said that the proposed project is currently in the re-tendering process.

He said that efforts are continuing to accelerate the construction work and ensure the smooth implementation of the project, and stated that the substation is expected to be completed by March 2027.

Particularly in Vizianagaram district, two 220 kV power projects worth around ₹46 crore are currently under implementation, the minister said.

Giving a broader perspective on the development of power infrastructure of the State, Mr. Ravi Kumar said that the government has approved 33/11 kV substations in areas experiencing heavy electricity load across the State and 200 substations are currently being constructed in different parts of the State to meet the increasing demand for electricity in the future.

Touching on another aspect of the issue, the Minister stated that the implementation of underground power cabling system in Vizianagaram town would require significant expenditure and therefore the feasibility of such a system would be examined based on the actual need and availability of funds.

The Minister noted that the number of industrial, commercial, domestic and agricultural energy consumers is increasing every year and said that in the face of increasing demand, the State government remains committed to expanding and strengthening the energy infrastructure, especially through the construction of new substations, to ensure reliable electricity supply in the coming years.
