Government working to minimise impact of global conflicts on people, Congress trying to create panic: PM Modi

Claiming that the center works to minimize the effects of global conflicts on the public, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his statement on Saturday, March 14, 2026, claimed that the Opposition Congress was acting “irresponsibly” by trying to create panic in the country.
Addressing a public meeting in Assam’s Silchar after announcing projects worth Rs 23,550 crore, Modi alleged that the Congress had ignored the development of the Northeast for decades and allowed such demarcation during Independence to cut off the Barak Valley’s access to the sea.
“While the world is facing wars, our effort is to minimize their impact on the people of the country. The Congress should have played the role of a responsible political party, but it has failed to do so. It is trying to create panic among the people.”
“They do not have any vision for either Assam or the nation, they only know how to abuse Modi, spread rumors, lies and create fake reels to mislead people,” he said.
Mr Modi also took out the Congress over the shirtless protest at the AI Impact Summit in Delhi last month, accusing the party of maligning the nation.
“The entire world is interested in artificial intelligence and the successful summit in Delhi was attended by global leaders, tech companies and their heads. But the Congress tried to embarrass the country by organizing a ‘kapda phar’ (tearing of clothes) exhibition,” he said.
Mr. Modi said the entire country had condemned “this rude” protest but the “Congress royal family” was “patting themselves on the back”.
“Congress has nothing left to do but tear its own clothes off,” he added.
Alleging that the Congress was carrying out activities against the interests of the country, the Prime Minister said that it could never ensure the welfare of the people in any state.
“The Congress is losing one election after another and in the near future the party will face a century of loss. The despair of its losses has driven it to open a front against the nation and its leaders are busy defaming the country.” he said.
Mr Modi alleged that the Congress was keeping the Northeast away from both the “tongue (heart) and Delhi”, ensuring that development did not reach the people of the region, plunging them into violence and underdevelopment.
“Just as Congress left the Northeast alone, it also played a major role in weakening the Barak Valley. When India became independent, the Congress allowed a border to be drawn that would cut off the Barak Valley’s access to the sea.”
“Barak Valley, once known as an industrial hub, has lost its strength. For decades after independence, Congress governments remained in power, but the region saw little development. Today, the BJP government is working to change this,” he added.
Mr. Modi said connectivity is being developed to connect Barak Valley with other parts of Northeast and West Bengal.
“It will be developed as a big logistics and trade hub of the region,” he said, noting that Barak Valley is also at the center of the government’s Act East Policy and will be a bridge connecting India with Southeast Asia.
The Prime Minister alleged that the Congress misled the youth of Assam towards the paths of violence and terrorism, while the BJP ensured that the state was a place of unlimited opportunities where they could reach the sky.
Stating that the BJP’s mantra is to prioritize those left behind in development, he said, “Where the Congress stops thinking, we start working.”
Referring to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Mr. Modi said he represented Assam for 10 years but did not give even a single penny to farmers in the state, while the BJP gave them more than Rs 20,000 crore.
At the programme, the Prime Minister took part in the ‘bhoomi poojan’ for the ₹22,864 crore access controlled highway between Silchar in Cachar district and Shillong in Meghalaya, the first of its kind in the Northeast.
The 166-km four-lane greenfield high-speed corridor will reduce the distance between Guwahati and Silchar from 295 km to 252 km and reduce travel time from 8.5 hours to around 5 hours, officials said.
Mr Modi also took part in the ‘bhoomi poojan’ for an elevated corridor to be built on NH-306 from Trunk Road near Capital Point to Rangirkhari Point in Silchar at a cost of ₹565 crore.
This project aims to ease congestion on one of Silchar’s busiest roads, improve connectivity with neighboring states such as Mizoram, Tripura and Manipur and contribute to the economic development of Barak Valley, officials said.
The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone of the 122-crore Agricultural College at Patharkandi in Karimganj district.
These are part of projects worth ₹ 47,800 crore announced by the Chief Minister in the state since Friday.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal were among those who attended the programme.
