Govt launches probe into e-commerce platforms over extra charges classified as Dark Pattern

New Delhi [India]5 October (Memorial): The Ministry of Consumer Affairs received various complaints against e-commerce platforms to receive additional fees under various names, which are classified as a “dark pattern” in which the government misled and exploited consumers.
Union Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister and new and renewable energy Pralhad Joshi shared information about X, saying that the Ministry launched a detailed investigation on the issue.
“The Ministry of Consumer Affairs received complaints against e-commerce platforms that charge extra for delivery, and an application classified as a dark model that misleads and exploiting consumers. A detailed investigation was launched to examine these platforms closely.
The shipment watched a user who shares a screenshot from an e-commerce website that lists more than one additional fee, including “offer transportation fee”, “payment transport fee” and “Protect Promise fee”.
These expenses increased the total cost of the item relatively even after discounts, which led customers to pay more than the price displayed.
Following the minister’s answer, several users participated in the discussion, expressed their dissatisfaction, and shared similar experiences. Many, such extra charges are widespread on different platforms and make online shopping more expensive and confusing. Some users also questioned the transparency of these applications, which called for more strict monitoring and editing.
Dark molds express manipulative design strategies or pricing tactics used by digital platforms to deceive consumers to make unwanted purchases or to participate in hidden fees. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs focuses on protecting users in India’s rapidly expanding digital market, actively defining and stimulating such applications in recent months.
As consumers are increasingly relying online shopping, the Ministry’s movement is expected to bring more examination to digital platforms and strengthen fair trade standards. (MOMENT)
