Green light to traffic signals at notorious intersection at Beeliar Drive and Spearwood Avenue

Traffic lights have been promoted as a solution to the notorious Spearwood intersection.
The intersection of Beeliar Drive and Spearwood Boulevard has experienced increased traffic congestion and accidents in recent years.
The situation is expected to worsen as the region continues to develop.
Beeliar Drive is used by approximately 30,620 vehicles and Spearwood Avenue by 20,396 on weekdays, about 10 percent of which are heavy vehicles.
Main Roads WA data for the five years ending December 2024 says there were 53 crashes here, 12 of which required medical attention.
At its Feb. 10 meeting, the City of Cockburn council supported installing traffic lights at the intersection, which would cost about $6 million.
The intersection currently has a roundabout, but a city report said the intersection is now operating “over current capacity” and is unsuitable.
A larger roundabout for $3.8 million and a larger roundabout with traffic signals for $3.98 million were also deemed unsuitable.
The council has asked for money to be allocated for the project in its next budget and has listed it in its 10-year capital works programme.
Approval from Main Roads will be required before signals can be installed.
“The city will move forward with more traffic modeling and design of traffic control signals,” Mayor Logan Howlett said.
