Green Party motion backs Hamas terror ‘makes Corbyn look moderate’ | UK | News

The Green Party is set to debate what critics say amounts to supporting Hamas terrorism and branding the party leader’s mother as a racist.
Campaigners say they have won “record-breaking” grassroots support for the “Zionism is Racism” resolution, which could go before delegates next month. Adoption of the measure would oblige the party to support Palestinian “resistance” against Israel “by all possible means within the framework of international law.”
A lawyer who backed the motion, who previously campaigned to have Hamas delisted as a terrorist organization in Britain, admitted it was “a veiled way of saying that Palestinians have the right to armed struggle and we should support that”.
The documents distributed along with the motion tabled for the Greens’ spring conference make it clear that the Palestinians’ “armed struggle” will receive the party’s support.
Jewish identity is marked as racism
According to the decision, belief in Zionism (supporting the establishment and maintenance of a Jewish homeland in Palestine) “will be considered any form of racism.”
Since the “overwhelming majority” of British Jews identify as Zionists, the Campaign Against Antisemitism argues that the measure would declare them racist by definition and launch a “terrible witch hunt”.
Green leader Zack Polanski’s mother shared pro-Israel content on social media, meaning the policy could require the mother to view herself as someone with racist beliefs.
Despite this, Polanski refused to reject the motion outright this week, saying he “missed” it because Zionism means different things to different people.
Deputy leader Mothin Ali is said to support the measure.
Israel’s existence is questioned
The Daily Mail says the Greens for Palestine group is running the “Zionism is Racism” campaign, which calls for official party opposition to Zionism and calls for “the lifting of the ban on Palestine Action”, but insists that anti-Zionism does not constitute anti-Semitism.
Delegates would wipe Israel off the map and commit to “the only democratic Palestinian state in all of historical Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital.”
The report states that in promotional graphics, the territory of Israel is depicted with the red, white, black and green colors of the Palestinian flag.
Artist supports violent resistance
British Palestinian artist Lubna Speitan reportedly put forward the motion at an online meeting this week, allegedly telling supporters that “record-breaking” numbers were rallying behind her.
In an earlier speech in September 2025, Ms. Speitan was quoted as saying: “The only way for any people to be liberated will be by force, what has been taken by force must be returned by force, and that comes through military intervention, and for me I support our right to armed struggle. We must never deny that…
“I will refuse to condemn the resistance of any oppressed or occupied people because we have that right.
“Only we can claim self-defense, not the occupier.”
He was said to have added: “The moment we stand up, we call for resistance. [they say] ‘You are a terrorist.'”
Ms Speitan was contacted via her website for comment by the Express.
‘Worser than the Corbyn era’
But John Mann, the government’s independent adviser on antisemitism, said: “This is support for terrorism and open racism against Jews. “There is no ambiguity.
“This is coming from the extremes of politics.
“This is far beyond what happened under Labor under Jeremy Corbyn.
“This makes Corbyn look like a moderate.
“That weird element that even Corbyn was worried about has entered the Greens en masse.
“It is also as far away from the Green policies of the past as possible.
“The Greens were about stopping fossil fuels and nuclear power and building wind farms.
“Now hate is causing members to flock to the Green party.”
Jewish organizations sound the alarm
The Board of Deputies of British Jews issued a stark warning about what the transition would mean.
A spokesman for the Board of British Jews warned that the motion and support campaign “threatens to make the Green Party a hostile and discriminatory environment for its Jewish members and has significant implications for British Jews more broadly.”
Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel told the Daily Mail: “This Green Party motion is one of the most hateful and racist documents I have ever read.
“It calls for the destruction of Israel and seeks to justify terrorism against Israel. Its purpose is to justify the destruction of the Jewish homeland and deny the Jews the right to a national home.
“The double standards are extraordinary because they demand a national home for Palestinians, not for Jews.
“I completely condemn this appalling document and hope that the people of the UK will see the Greens as a racist and hateful political party.”
The party reported to the terrorism police
One party member went so far as to alert counter-terrorism officials about the proposal, the Mail reported earlier this month.
A Green Party spokesperson stressed that this was “not a policy at this time” and was merely a “motion” that all members could put forward. He said it must pass an ongoing prioritization vote before it is voted on at the spring conference.
Online organizers supporting the resolution have published detailed voting guides showing new members exactly how to prioritize the resolution in voting and how to vote for it at the conference if it is on the agenda.
But the online campaign, which encourages new members to join in support of the motion, provides detailed step-by-step guides on how to vote for the motion in priority voting and, if successful, how to vote on the motion at the spring conference.
