Gunman in Austin mass shooting became citizen in 2013, had address in Pflugerville in 2017

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Neighbors of the gunman who killed two people and injured more than a dozen others at a downtown Austin bar reacted Sunday after SWAT officers searched a residence believed to be connected to 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Diagne entered the United States on a tourist visa in March 2000. He has since become a legal permanent resident and acquired citizenship.
The Austin Police Department posted a photo of the gunman, Ndiaga Diagne, on social media.
It was unclear what prompted him to open fire outside Buford’s Bar on West Sixth Street early Sunday morning.
Here’s what we know about the last 26 years of the attacker’s life:
-
DHS confirmed Diagne arrived in the country on March 13, 2000, on a B-2 tourist visa.
-
Six years later, in June 2006, Diagne became a legal permanent resident and received an IR-6 visa, DHS said. The visa was based on Diagne’s marriage to a US citizen.
-
Diagne was naturalized as a U.S. citizen on April 5, 2013.
-
KXAN has learned Diagne was issued a driver’s license in 2017 with an address on Kickapoo Cavern Drive in Pflugerville.
-
Diagne has no known criminal history. But DHS said he was arrested in Texas in connection with a crash that caused vehicle damage in 2022.
A source told KXAN that the FBI executed a search warrant in connection with a shooting that occurred Sunday morning at East Ridge Apartments, an apartment complex in the 5200 block of Ross Road in Del Valle.
Neighbors said they heard shouts from law enforcement officers telling someone outside to get out of unit 814. Neighbors said they heard loud noises, including gunshots and flash bangs, as FBI agents entered the unit.
KXAN crews saw FBI agents going in and out of the apartment well into Sunday evening. Neighbors were shown a photo circulating on social media of the man later identified by APD as the shooter. They confirmed that he was the man living in unit 814.
Neighbors seemed shocked, saying Diagne was friendly. They confirmed that the shooter owned a black SUV and saw the vehicle parked as usual around 7pm on Saturday night.
This is an evolving story. Updates will be posted here as they become available.
