He Drank for Five Hours, Then Got Behind the Wheel. His Friend Never Made It Home

A British court has sentenced a driver to nearly 12 years in prison following a fatal high-speed crash that occurred after hours of heavy drinking, in a case that underlines the deadly consequences of careless driving and impaired judgement.
Ross Neville, 35, spent nearly five hours drinking heavily in Newcastle city center before getting behind the wheel of his Ford Raptor pickup truck, the Daily Mail reported. He was accompanied by his friend Matthew Newton, 28, who did not survive the journey home.
Investigators later determined that Neville had consumed a mixture of beer, shots and spirits throughout the evening. He chose to drive despite being clearly over the legal alcohol limit. CCTV footage and financial records pieced together his movements and provided a detailed timeline of events leading up to the fatal crash.

As Neville left town, witnesses and footage captured him driving dangerously. He was seen overtaking other vehicles at high speed and driving erratically. Moments before the crash his truck reached speeds of 108 miles per hour on the A69 near Throckley on the outskirts of Newcastle.
The Ford F-150 Raptor has a top speed of approximately 184 mph, offers excellent maneuverability for a full-size pickup thanks to its advanced suspension and wide stance, and can brake from 60 mph to zero in approximately 137 feet; That’s impressive stopping power for a truck its size.
FOX Dual-Live internal bypass shock absorbers and electronically controlled damping allow the truck to instantly adapt to terrain changes. In terms of handling, it has lateral acceleration measured at 0.71g, which is solid for a heavy pickup.

Unfortunately, the trip ended in disaster when Neville lost control and crashed into a metal barrier. The power of the accident was catastrophic. Emergency services were not immediately notified as Neville fled the scene on foot, leaving his seriously injured friend behind.
In a disturbing detail that emerged during the investigation, a passing HGV driver was seen stopping at the scene of the crash and talking to Neville. When asked about his passenger’s condition, Neville said his friend was “fine” despite the seriousness of the situation. He then left the scene without seeking help.
Matthew Newton, from Carlisle in Cumbria, was pronounced dead at the scene. Medical evidence later showed that his injuries were irreparable. But the court heard Neville made no attempt to help himself or contact emergency services.

Detectives from Northumbria Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit encountered initial difficulties, particularly as Neville left the scene and a breath test was not carried out immediately.
But officers were able to build a strong case by using surveillance footage, transaction records and witness statements to show the extent of alcohol consumption and reckless driving.
At Newcastle Crown Court, Neville pleaded guilty to charges including causing death by dangerous driving and driving without insurance. He was sentenced to 11 years and 11 months in prison. He was also given a seven-year driving ban, which will begin after his release.
Sergeant Greg Huntley, who is leading the investigation, described the incident as shocking and condemned Neville’s actions before and after the crash. He stressed that Neville’s decision to flee the scene and mislead a witness reflected a complete disregard for his friend’s life.
A Family’s Loss and a Judge’s Rebuke
During sentencing, Judge Edward Bindloss was equally critical of the driver’s actions. Addressing Neville directly, he highlighted his failure to take action in the moments after the crash. The judge said Neville did nothing to help his friend and likely prioritized his own escape in order to avoid a breathalyzer test.

The victim’s family also shared the deep impact of the tragedy. Matthew’s mother Anna spoke emotionally about the loss of her son, describing the day of the accident as the moment her life changed forever.
He talked about the future his son would never have, including marriage, children and the realization of his ambitions.
He described Matthew as a kind and lively person who had built a successful business and was well-liked by those around him. His death left a permanent void in the lives of his family and friends.
