Martha Stewart speaks out on ICE protests after fatal shootings

Martha Stewart spoke about the current climate in the United States.
The star took to her social media days after 37-year-old anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agitator Alex Pretti was fatally shot in Minneapolis and weeks after Renee Good was also shot and killed during an encounter with an ICE officer.
Stewart credited his 14-year-old grandson, Jude Stewart, for encouraging him to speak out about the ICE protests that broke out in the Minnesota city and the protests taking place across the United States.
The 84-year-old bestselling author shared an excerpt from her grandson’s text message. To read: “I’m not sure it’s forgivable not to talk right now.”

Stewart shared a screenshot of the text with her own caption at the top, writing: “My grandson wrote this to me yesterday and he is fourteen and sensitive to what’s going on in our country, as we all should be.”
He added: “I am discouraged and saddened every day that we cannot show our sympathy to those under siege, that the immigrants many of us are or are descended from are told we are not welcome, that we cannot show our frustration in peaceful demonstrations, and that we may be attacked or even killed by Federal troops. Things must and must change quickly and peacefully.”
The star noted under the photo description: “Grandson Jude wrote me a note yesterday, so I took it into consideration and published the above.”

Pop star Katy Perry shared resources on Instagram encouraging her 201 million followers to take action as protests continue in Minnesota.
It was titled “Turn anger into action” to mail.
Perry called on his followers to call their senators before January 31 to block ICE funding. The post included suggestions on what to say over the phone when speaking to representatives in Congress.

Meanwhile, Valerie Bertinelli touched on immigration in a post she dedicated to her late ex-husband Eddie Van Halen’s 71st birthday.
Eddie, who died in October 2020 at the age of 65 after a battle with cancer, was born in the Netherlands and emigrated to the US in the 1960s, eventually forging a successful rock career with his band Van Halen.

“You came to America as a little kid, knowing only three words of English, playing music with your father and brother on the boat that carried you here. An immigrant who changed the face of music and left his legacy in a light that continues to shine. Happy birthday Ed,” Bertinelli captioned his caption, adding a heart emoji.

Fans applauded Bertiinelli for highlighting that Eddie is an immigrant, with one person writing: “I’m glad you highlighted that he was an immigrant for those who don’t understand how much immigrants contribute to the fabric of the USA.”
Another commenter wrote: “Happy birthday to one of the millions of immigrants who made America more beautiful in so many ways! May God bless the memory of Ed and all who gave us such a wonderful life and creativity in a free country!”

“Such a beautiful post, Valerie. I can’t imagine how difficult and scary it must have been for Eddie and Alex to come to a strange place so young and not knowing English. Her son Wolfgang also wrote, “I love you mom,” adding a heart emoji.
