Heathrow’s plan for longer third runway chosen by government

Heathrow Airport’s third runway plan, which includes relocating the M25 motorway, has been selected by the government.

The government was considering two schemes, one from the airport and the other from the Arora Group, led by hotel tycoon Surinder Arora.

Heathrow announced proposals for a third runway in the summer, which would be 3.5km long and require a new road tunnel under the airport. Arora Group’s rival bid would include a shorter runway at lower cost and would not require replacement of the M25.

A final decision on whether a third runway will be given the green light is still years away.

Last month the government asked for more information to help choose between the Heathrow and Arora programmes.

The Department for Transport said Heathrow’s own proposal offered the most viable option and the “greatest prospect” of gaining a decision on planning approval in this parliament.

The supported plan will inform the government’s review of the Airports National Policy Statement.

Once this is completed Heathrow is expected to apply for planning permission. The government then hopes to make a decision by 2029.
