Heavy rain expected on Friday after dry month

A day of heavy rain is expected to follow the wet weather that hit Brisbane late on Thursday.
Humidity off Queensland’s east coast caused rain to land and wet conditions were forecast to persist until winds from the west brought dry weather.
Rain is expected to turn into light showers on Friday afternoon and evening, while more rain is expected over the weekend.
“There will still be showers throughout the weekend, but [Friday is] biggest rain,” said Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Shane Kennedy.
Rainy weather will surround Brisbane for days, and humidity will be felt among the showers.
The city could receive up to 30 millimeters of rain on Friday.
Kennedy stated that February is generally a dry month.
“Compared to February averages, we’re generally sitting at around 10 to 20 per cent of what we expect in February. In Brisbane City, for example, we tend to see February around 170 millimetres, but we’re running at around 60 millimetres.”
“It was a little drier to the west.”
The average for February in Ipswich is 177 millimeters and the city has reached 26 millimeters so far this year. At Amberley Airport, where the average temperature was 120 millimeters at this time of the year, only 40 millimeters fell.
“This probably won’t bring us back to the mean, but it should at least be a welcome rain for shipyards that have struggled a bit this month,” Kennedy said.
Rainfall is expected to be more intense in coastal areas and less effective in inland areas.
“So a little bit less rainfall for the western suburbs.”
The bureau is not forecasting any thunderstorms, but if they do occur they probably won’t be in the Brisbane area.
Rain was not expected to be sufficient to cause flooding, but storm drains may overflow.
