MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9)A winter storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall to parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin Saturday through Sunday, which could lead to hazardous travel conditions through Monday.

Between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., Minnesota State Patrol said there were 36 property damage crashes, two injury crashes, one skid and 23 vehicles off the road.

The Minnesota State Patrol has shared crash numbers so far as the winter storm moves across the state.

There were 137 accidents with property damage, 21 accidents with injuries, one accident with death and eight vehicles off the road.

The State Patrol is asking drivers to stay off the roads until the storm passes.

St. Paul Parks and Recreation announced on social media that all parks and recreation facilities in the city, including the Como Zoo, will be closed Sunday.

Minneapolis, St. Paul declares early snow emergency

What do we know?

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and St. St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her announced at a news conference Saturday afternoon that both cities had already declared snow emergencies ahead of a major winter storm that will be coming to the Twin Cities Saturday night and most of Sunday.

St. In St. Paul, residents are encouraged to take their cars off their all-night driving routes on Saturday night. He said the city will open St. Petersburg at 5 p.m. on Saturday so residents can park their cars for free. He said he would open the Block 19 parking ramp in downtown St. Paul. Selected parks and recreation areas will also be open for parking.

A snow emergency will be in effect in Minneapolis starting at 21:00 on Sunday. The City of Minneapolis will make the Farmers’ Market and Salvation Army parking lots free from 2 p.m. Saturday until next Wednesday, Frey said.

Ramp A in downtown Minneapolis will open at 6 a.m. Sunday, and cars can park there until 8 p.m. Wednesday for a $1 fee.

“Our snowplow drivers are in the starting blocks and ready to go. For them, this is their Super Bowl, and they’ve been preparing for these types of snow events all year long,” Frey said.

The National Weather Service has issued Blizzard Warnings for much of central and southern Minnesota starting Saturday afternoon and extending through the weekend into Monday morning. It includes the entire Twin Cities metro and other counties (Hennepin, Ramsey, Anoka, Carver, Benton, Sherburne, Stearns, Wright, Chisago, Dakota, Isanti, Scott, Washington and Goodhue counties).

A major snowstorm is expected to hit the Twin Cities and much of the state starting Saturday night. It will start with cold rain, freezing rain and sleet across central Minnesota late Saturday night, accompanied by strong winds.

Heavy snow is expected over a wide area and travel across the state could become nearly impossible late Saturday night and into Sunday. A narrow area within the system could produce significant snowfall for some areas in far east central Minnesota and west central Wisconsin.

  • Until noon on Monday, March 16, do not park on city streets, even if the street has already been plowed.

  • Remember, since this is expected to be a multi-day event, every street in Eden Prairie will likely need to be plowed multiple times.
