Cliff collapse horror as dust cloud engulfs beach packed with sunbat | UK | News
Beachgoers watched in astonishment as a section of the cliff collapsed where people were sunbathing. The incident occurred at around 16.30 on Friday, July 10, between Penarth Beach and Cardiff Bay Dam in Wales.
A striking photo circulating online reveals a large cloud of dust found near people enjoying this beloved spot. Vale of Glamorgan council has issued a “strong” warning urging the public to stay away while council crews assess the extent of the landslide.
David Wilton, who was on Penarth beach at the time, said it was “truly surprising” no one was injured. WalesOnline reported. He said: “A lot of us were on that side of Penarth beach because it was so hot after work on the Friday and the water was rising. There were a lot of youngsters towards the slide, looking away from the adults. Then we heard a thump and then saw a little slide; we all knew what it was.”
David said he was relieved to see that no one was injured by the landslide. He added: “There was a huge dust cloud. Our concern was whether anyone had been injured. It was really surprising that there were no people as there were sunbathers on both sides of the landslide. People just stood and stared as it is rare to see something like this, especially at a busy time.”
A council spokesman said the coastline had an extensive history of instability and the public should continue to comply with warning signs, barriers and safety warnings. He said: “We are aware of a landslide along the foreshore between Penarth Pier and Cardiff Bay Dam.
“This stretch of coastline has a well-documented history of cliff instability, landslides and rockfalls, particularly following prolonged weather events and coastal erosion.
“Municipal teams are assessing the extent of the landslide and will take any necessary measures to ensure public safety.
“The public is strongly advised to stay away from the affected area and avoid all cliff faces and areas immediately below them as a precaution as landslides and rockfalls can occur without warning.
“Residents and visitors should continue to follow all warning signs, barriers and safety notices while enjoying our coastal paths and beaches. We continue to monitor the situation and will share further updates as they become available.”
