Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has issued a strict instruction to the police to handle cases related to crimes against women and children with utmost care and sensitivity. He emphasized that the instruction must be followed in letter and spirit.
At an event organized by the Police Department at the Anna Centenary Library Auditorium in Kotturpuram on Saturday, January 3, 2026, it presented appointment orders to 20 selected candidates as a symbolic gesture, signaling the issuance of appointment orders to a total of 750 candidates – comprising 621 Deputy Sub-Inspectors of Police and 129 Fire and Rescue Services Station Officers – selected through the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board.
Addressing newly recruited police officers and senior police officers, Mr. Stalin said: “When investigating crimes, especially against women and children, you must approach them with utmost care and ‘logically’. As the Prime Minister in charge of this department, my request is not only an order that you must comply with.”
“Similarly, you should adopt a ‘zero tolerance’ policy in preventing the circulation and sale of narcotic substances. You all have children at home. Realize that even if someone else is affected today, the drug danger may affect our own children tomorrow, and act with personal participation,” he said.
Each police officer must decide not to allow any crime to be committed under his or her control. Mr. Stalin said, “When a report appears in the media that a police officer has done a good deed, it is a source of pride for the entire department. Likewise, if even one police officer makes a mistake somewhere, this affects people’s trust in the entire department. Realizing this, each of you should act carefully and responsibly.”
In his speech to the new soldiers, the Prime Minister said, “Saying that the police are friends of the people should not remain just a phrase or a slogan; you must prove it in reality. As a police officer, you must be easily accessible to people and treat them with courtesy. Your determination must be seen in the work you do. Use an iron hand to prevent crime, but when dealing with complainants, appear with respect, a smile and genuine interest.”
He also listed various welfare measures implemented for police personnel in the state. Since his government took office, a total of 17,330 personnel have been selected and appointed in the Tamil Nadu Police Department; these included 66 Deputy Inspectors of Police, 1,065 Sub-Inspectors and 16,199 Grade 2 police officers.
Additionally, 2,000 firefighters, 129 Station Officers and 366 Grade 2 prison guards were selected and appointed through the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board. “We have also issued a compassionate appointment order for the dependents of 1,532 personnel serving in the police force who died in the line of duty,” Mr. Stalin said.
Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Dheeraj Kumar, Director General of Police, Law and Order and Head of Police Force (On Duty) G.Venkataraman, Director General of Police (Fire and Rescue Establishment) Seema Agrawal were present on the occasion.
