‘Hero’ who wrestled gun from Bondi shooter named as Ahmed al Ahmed

BBCIt was announced that the “hero” eyewitness who was seen wrestling with the gun of one of the Bondi Beach attackers was 43-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed.
In the video, verified by the BBC, Ahmed can be seen running towards the gunman and grabbing his gun, before turning the gun on him and forcing him to retreat.
Mr Ahmed, a fruit shop owner and father of two, remains in hospital where he underwent surgery for gunshot wounds to his arm and hand, his family told 7News Australia.
11 people were killed More than 1,000 people attended Hanukkah celebrations during the Sunday night shooting. The attack was later declared by police as a terrorist incident targeting the Jewish community.
Ahmed’s cousin Mustafa told 7News Australia: “He’s still in hospital and we don’t know exactly what happened, the doctor says he’s fine.
“We hope he is okay, he is a hero, 100 percent a hero. He was shot twice, one in his arm and one in his hand, he needs surgery.”
While it is thought that two armed men carried out the attack, the police are investigating whether others were involved in the incident. Police said one of the attackers was killed and the other was in “critical” condition.
Footage of Mr Ahmed’s intervention was shared widely online.
In the photo, one of the gunmen can be seen standing behind a palm tree near a small pedestrian bridge, pointing his gun at an out-of-range target and firing.
Ahmed, hiding behind a parked car, is seen jumping on the attacker.
He manages to wrest the gun from the attacker’s hand, pushes him to the ground and points the gun at him. The attacker retreats.
He then lowers the gun and appears to raise one hand in the air, indicating to police that he is not one of the shooters.
Another gunman continues shooting near the bridge. It is not clear who or what he is targeting.
At a press conference late on Sunday, New South Wales Premier Chris Minns praised the bravery of Mr Ahmed, whose name was not released at the time.
“This man is a true hero and I have no doubt that there are many people alive tonight because of his bravery.”
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: “Today we saw Australians rushing into danger to help others.
“These Australians are heroes and their bravery saved lives.”
