Bull Gores Runner In The Face During Spain’s San Fermin Bull Run Festival
PAMPLONA, Spain (AP) — One runner was struck in the face and many more were lucky not to be seriously injured. Chaotic bull run at Spain’s San Fermin festival on Saturday.
Six bulls and their accompanying oxen charged through the thrill-seeking crowds that packed the alley course in Pamplona. Huge animals dropped bodies on the paving stones, and stumbling runners caused many accidents during the two-and-a-half-minute run from the corral to the bullring where bullfighters would kill the bulls later in the day.
One runner was gored in the face, while 12 more people needed medical treatment for various injuries, according to the University of Navarra Hospital.
Early in the 875-meter (957-yard) run, a black bull broke away from the herd and charged into a group of people, striking one of them in the side of the face with a horn. It was not clear whether the incident occurred at that time or not.
Many runners seemed completely unaware that the bulls were breathing down their necks and pushed them out of their way rather than trying to trick them.
Saturday was the fifth morning run of the eight-day festival in northern Spain.
