High school shooting leaves at least 10 dead, dozens injured in Canada as cops say suspect is among deceased

At least 10 people, including a suspected shooter, died when a woman opened fire at a high school in the northeastern province of British Columbia, Canada.

A total of six victims were found at Tumbler Ridge Middle School, including two at an associated residence, and another died while being transported to the hospital, Royal Mountain police said.

Authorities said the suspected female shooter died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Another 25 people were being evaluated for injuries at a local medical centre, according to police, CBC reported; Two of these injuries were life-threatening and had to be transported by plane, according to police.

Authorities who identified the attacker are not releasing the name at this time, RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd told reporters. At the time of preparation of this report, the suspect’s motive remains unclear.

“I think we’ll struggle to determine the ‘why,’ but we’ll do our best to determine what occurred,” Floyd said at a news conference.

The superintendent confirmed that the suspect found dead at the school was the same person identified as a woman in a dress with brown hair in an active shooter alert sent out earlier today.

‘Officers are conducting further searches of additional homes and properties to determine if anyone else was injured or otherwise connected to today’s events,’ officials said.

In a statement, the District of Tumbler Ridge said their community had suffered a heartbreaking incident: ‘Our hearts go out to those affected and we recognize that many residents may be feeling shocked, scared and overwhelmed.’

The district noted that both Tumbler Ridge middle schools and elementary schools will be closed for the rest of the week.

Tumbler Ridge is a regional municipality of approximately 2,400 people, approximately 736 miles north of Vancouver.

According to the state government’s list, the secondary school has 175 students from class 7 to 12.

The earlier emergency alert asking the public to shelter in place was lifted at 17:45 local time.
