Team USA women’s hockey captain Hilary Knight’s huge third-period goal that sent the gold medal game against Canada into overtime in Milan on Thursday night had historic consequences.

Knight became the greatest women’s hockey player in Olympic history when she fired a shot at the blue line from Julia Edwards with just 2:04 left on the clock, creating an empty net for the USA and tying the gold medal match at one goal apiece.

In the end, Team USA was able to close out the match against Canada, which ultimately worked in their favor.

In overtime, Megan Keller won the gold medal with a backhand shot that went around a Team Canada defender and passed through Ann-Renée Desbiens’ right arm and into the net.

Knight’s goal also broke the U.S. women’s career goals record while representing the Stars and Stripes, previously held by Natalie Darwitz and Katie King. He now has 15 in his career.

Knight also broke the record for most career Olympic points in Team USA women’s hockey history, reaching the 33rd point of her career. Knight broke the record previously held by Jenny Potter, who had 11 goals and 21 assists in her career.

This adds to the amazing career Knight has had for Team USA, as this victory in Milan marked her second Olympic gold medal and fifth overall. And yes, this is another Olympic record.

There’s a reason why Knight, who won 12 gold medals during his career between the Olympics and World Championships, wears the letter “C” on his chest. He recorded 81 goals and 70 assists during his long career.
