Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with President Xi Jinping on the sides of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin for the first time to China in seven years. This showed that both countries give US President Donald Trump prioritize the dialogue where the new Delhi applied high tariffs.

The relations between the two neighboring countries faced increasing tensions after the conflict of Galwan Valley in 2020.
