New footage of upcoming ITV drama The Lady has been shared ahead of its release. The four-part series follows the story of Jane Andrews, Sarah Ferguson’s former dresser, who was convicted of murdering her lover in 2001. Game of Thrones star Natalie Dormer takes on the role of the former Duchess in the upcoming series; Meanwhile, BAFTA winner Mia McKenna-Bruce plays Jane.

Elsewhere in the cast, Outlander’s Ed Speleers will play victim Thomas Cressman; Other notable names such as Philip Glenister, Outnumbered’s Claire Skinner and Laura Aikman of Gavin and Stacey fame will also appear. The Lady tells the rags-to-riches story of Jane Andrews, who fails when she is convicted of murder. Although the release date has not been confirmed yet, the series is likely to air in early 2026.

The series was already met with controversy when Natalie Dormer announced that she would not be promoting the series after the negativity caused by Sarah Ferguson’s ties to pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. He said he plans to donate his proceeds from the program to a charity focused on child abuse.

The pair quickly formed a fast friendship and it was widely reported that during their connection, Sarah even affectionately called her new employee ‘Lady Jane’. But the dresser reportedly tried to emulate every aspect of her life, from her personal style to her accent. She was frequently seen in the highest social circles in the United Kingdom, and Jane managed to gain a foothold in the upper classes, but after nine years of service she lost her job at the Duchess.

Still grieving her fall from grace, Jane met and developed a relationship with charismatic businessman Thomas Cressman. Cracks began to appear in the love on which Jane had pinned all her hopes, and this had disastrous consequences.

One night when he went to sleep, Jane hit him with a cricket bat and stabbed him in the chest, killing him in their Fulham flat. He went on the run and police searched for him for four days until they found him in his car in Cornwall, having overdosed on painkillers. Jane denied murder at the Old Bailey trial in 2001, accusing Thomas of abuse and claiming he killed her accidentally in self-defence. However, the jury found him guilty and he was sentenced to life imprisonment. The judge told her: “By killing the man you loved, you ended his life and ruined your own.”

Jane escaped from East Sutton Park Prison in Kent after serving nine years of her sentence. The old dresser was found three days later in a hotel room with her family. He was released from prison in August 2019 and started a brand new life working at a charity-funded animal hospital.
