The 23-year-old history maker was hacked to death by a gang in the early hours of Monday, January 12, 2026, in the waiting area of the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital (KMC), where the man was sleeping near the delivery room. Police said the murder was committed due to a previous enmity.
The victim was identified as Adhi, a resident of Mahatma Gandhi Nagar in Kolathur. There were more than seven criminal cases filed against him, including murder and attempted murder cases.
According to police sources, Adhi came to the hospital on Sunday night, January 11, to meet his 21-year-old classmate Suchitra, who was married to a man named Surya. She gave birth to a premature baby at KMC on December 16, 2025. While the newborn’s health condition deteriorated in the hospital for the last few days, the child died on Sunday before responding to treatment.
After meeting Suchitra on Sunday, Adhi remained in the waiting area outside the delivery room.
Police sources said that around 3.30 am on Monday morning, Suchitra’s husband Surya and his friends reached the spot. They surrounded Adhi and attacked him with weapons repeatedly. Adhi was fatally injured and collapsed.
On tip-off, Kilpauk police rushed to the spot, retrieved Adhi’s body and sent it for autopsy. The police launched an intense search by forming special teams to catch the three suspects (Surya, Alibhai and Karthik), who fled the scene after committing the murder.
On Monday afternoon, Additional Commissioner of Police (South), KS Narenthiran Nair and Joint Commissioner of Police (East), Bandi Gangadhar visited the crime scene and conducted a preliminary investigation. Mr. Nair said two of the accused involved in the crime have been arrested.
The reason behind the murder
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Nair said that the victim was released from jail on bail 10 days ago and visited her classmate Suchitra after giving birth in the hospital. A companion who was with Adhi and Suchitra reportedly fought with hospital staff following the death of her child late on Sunday. Security personnel at the hospital had to evacuate the two. However, they stayed in the waiting area near the ward and consumed alcohol.
At around 03:00 at night, the police intervened and asked them to evacuate the building, and another argument broke out. Police suspect that the female attendant gave information to the suspects about Adhi’s movements. He was allegedly involved in the murder of a person named Palani in Rajamangalam in 2023; Police said this could also be a reason behind the murder.
Additional Commissioner added: “We arrested two persons and interrogated two women. Four more suspects were interrogated.”
