Hobart Hurricanes survive against Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and the Melbourne stars in a BBL thriller
“If he had been in better shape he would have asked for the opening, but I think he probably wasn’t that confident about doing it,” Waugh said.
But Haddin replied: “Even Stoinis… in a seven-over game, it doesn’t matter; he won’t face 10 balls. If he faces 10 balls, he’ll score 25 runs. I just think they’ve got it wrong on that point.”
Earlier in the game Haddin said: “I don’t want to play at the back end of the game with Maxwell and Stoinis only scoring a point or two.
“Marcus Stoinis is a batsman who can score 20 points from the end.
“I still don’t know why Maxwell and Stoinis didn’t get more possession earlier. They left it too late.”
Stoinis sits 13th on the Big Bash season’s top scorers list but the out-of-form Maxwell sits at an eye-popping 59th.
Harper, meanwhile, sits third with 381 runs from 11 matches, at an average of 54.42 and a strike rate of 155.51.
Proven products Maxwell and Stoinis have been named in the Australia squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup, while Harper passed up the chance.
The Stars were 1-9 when rain forced the players off the field and their winning goal was changed under DLS.
Cartwright bowled a six to Mitch Owen in the second-last ball of the innings and the Stars needed five to win and four to draw in the final over, forcing a super over.
But Owen held his nerve and retained Cartwright for just a single over as the Stars finished the match on 4-81.
Earlier, as Hurricanes pacer Riley Meredith slipped on a wet surface, former Australian wicketkeeper and Hobart gloveman Matthew Wade said: “We shouldn’t be playing in this.”
During an earlier rain break, Wade had said on Fox Cricket: “No doubt everyone wants to play, but there comes a point where if it keeps raining and the guys try to bowl they’ll get 145.” [km/h]Some common sense needs to be involved as well.

It was a brutal end to the season for the Stars, who managed to take top spot and take two bites by beating Perth in the final game of the regular season.
Stoinis hit a six off the first ball of the final over but was walked out before Cartwright tried his best with three boundaries in three balls.
Hurricanes pacer Riley Meredith (2-19) scalped early in the chase to help his team take the lead in the game.
Earlier, Webster, who has only played four times in the Big Bash League this summer due to Test team commitments, had hit three sixes in the final over which Tom Curran finished with 21 not out.
The Stars lost two outfield catches, including Nikhil Chaudhary (24 off 11), who hit back-to-back maximums after Curran left the substitute at cover.
Mitchell Swepson bowled a tight two overs for just 12, while Stoinis took 1-6 but scored just one.
After losing the toss, Hobart opener Owen, who has not made the full flight this season, shot Maxwell into the stands but was dismissed with two balls to spare after seven points.
Had the game been over, the higher-seeded Hurricanes (third) would have advanced at the expense of the Stars (fourth).
