Sunil Gavaskar makes BOLD claim on Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli’s 2027 World Cup future

Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar believes that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli can still feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup and calls them “sureties” if they maintain their fitness and form. His bold claim has reignited the debate over the future of India’s senior stars in the next global tournament.
Noted Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his belief that both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have made a convincing argument for their selection in India’s 2027 ODI World Cup squad. After suffering two consecutive ducks, Kohli bounced back with an impressive unbeaten 74 in the third ODI against Australia, while Rohit emerged as the top scorer in the three-match series. Together, these cricket icons formed an outstanding partnership, leading India to a 9-wicket victory against Australia.
Emphasizing that Rohit and Virat’s participation in the series against Australia sends a strong message about their desire to be included in the World Cup squad, Gavaskar claimed that both of them should definitely be in the team if they are fit and available.
“The moment they were ready for this trip, it was clear that they wanted to be there in the 2027 World Cup,” Gavaskar told India Today.
“And no matter what happens between now and then With the talent and experience they have – whether they score or not – it is certain that they will be in the squad if they are available. “With this type of form you can write their names directly into the South Africa 2027 World Cup squad.”
After retiring from Tests and T20Is, both Rohit and Kohli are now focusing on only one format and their careers have become a matter of serious speculation in recent times.
On Saturday, the two iconic batsmen came together once again to prevent India from suffering a series of upsets, forging an impressive 168-run partnership that remains unbroken. The effort carried the team to a reassuring nine-wicket victory in the third ODI at the SCG; Rohit scored a magnificent 121 and Kohli contributed to India’s success with a solid 74 runs.
“I always love coming here and playing here. Good memories of 2008. I’m not sure if we will come back to Australia, but we are enjoying cricket no matter how much praise we get,” Rohit said after being named Player of the Match and Player of the Series.
