Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Friday that the Muslim population in the country has increased due to infiltration from neighboring countries Pakistan and Bangladesh. Shah made this comment while speaking at an event in the national capital Delhi. He added that voting rights should be given only to legal Indian citizens. Citing data, Shah said that the number of Hindus in the country has decreased but the Muslim population has increased significantly.

What did the Shah say about India’s population?

At the event in Delhi, Shah said: “The Muslim population increased by 24.6 per cent while the Hindu population decreased by 4.5 per cent. I am telling you this because this did not happen because of the fertility rate. It happened due to infiltration.” The Minister added: “I will tell you the difference between an infiltrator and a refugee. The entire decreasing Hindu population in Pakistan and Bangladesh, most of them, took refuge in India. The increasing Muslim population in India was not due to fertility, but due to the infiltration of large numbers of Muslims into the country.”

Shah brought up the SIR exercise

Shah also said that the inclusion of infiltrators in voter lists pollutes the spirit of the Constitution. He also raised the issue of special intensive revision (SIR) of the Election Commission (EC) on voter lists and said that the issue should not be considered from a political perspective. He said opposition parties objected to the controversial practice “due to cutting into their vote banks”. He added: “It is the EC’s constitutional responsibility to clear the voter list. If you have any problems, you can go to court.” Voter list revision was recently completed in Bihar, where state assembly elections are scheduled to be held next month.
