One person has died after a small plane crashed onto the runway in Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire Police rushed to the scene at Sherburn Aero Club in Elmet just before 1pm on Sunday.

A man in his 70s from the Leeds area died at the scene. He is believed to be the only person on the plane.

The statement said: “Just before 1pm today, we were called to reports of a light aircraft crash at the Sherburn Aero Club.

“It has been reported that a small plane crashed onto the runway.

“North Yorkshire Police attended along with other emergency services.

“Sadly, a man in his 70s from the Leeds area who was believed to be the sole resident has been pronounced dead.

“His family is currently being supported by specially trained officers and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”
