‘Hot dog populism’: EU votes to ban veggie meat terms

Politicians in the European Parliament voted for prohibiting the labeling of vegetarian protein with terms such as steaks or meats.

MPs voted with 532 votes to define meat as “edible parts of animals” and to ensure that the use of words such as steak, snapzel, sausage or burger for animal products, not plant -based.

The proposal will go to a parliamentary committee to be clarified before returning to the EU executive branch and then go to 27 member states of the block for negotiations.

Céline Imart, a conservative German deputy and former farmer, said it was misleading to use meat -related terms for vegetarian products.

In a discussion in parliament on Tuesday, “We are not talking about the prohibition of vegetables or plant -based alternatives at the moment.

Anna Sturgkh, an Austrian deputy from the liberal Neos party, said that consumers were not easily deceived according to food labels on non -meat products.

“Cattle tomatoes do not contain beef … Women’s fingers are not made of real women’s fingers,” he said.

“Let’s trust consumers and stop this sausage sandwich populism.”
