Mauritius Man Returns to Ancestral Odisha for Spiritual Homecoming

Ramrup’s ancestors, known as the Jagannath family, were taken from Jajpur to Mauritius during the British colonial period; Meanwhile, thousands of people from eastern India were sent abroad as indentured labourers. Centuries later, Ramrup’s heart still beats to the rhythm of that forgotten homeland.

“I’m not coming here to find or take anything. I feel this land – Odisha, Jajpur – is calling me home. My blood is from here,” he said with a flash of emotion.

This is his fourth pilgrimage from Mauritius to Odisha, and with each visit he moves one step closer to the past he is determined to reclaim. He performed ‘Pindadaan’ rituals for his ancestors at Siddheshwar Ghat on the banks of the Baitarani River on Friday, symbolically reuniting his lineage with the holy land.

During his current seven-day stay, Ramrup plans to visit the revered Maa Biraja Temple and meet Jajpur district administration officials to share ancestral documents and seek guidance in tracing possible surviving relatives.

Despite the difficult struggle of finding blood ties that had been severed for centuries, his determination remained unshaken. His journey is not only a journey of discovery but also a homecoming of the soul.

According to Pandit Prabhat Mishra, a priest, “Ramrup’s quest reflects the eternal truth that the legacy is not forgotten – it is just waiting for someone to listen to its call across time, tide and distance.”
