The board recently voted to change the name of the venue to the Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Performing Arts Center.

Before that, Trump replaced several board members and declared himself president.

The name change was met with praise and controversy. Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio., a former member of the board, filed a lawsuit challenging the name change.

“The Board’s claim to change the name of the Kennedy Center violates federal law,” the lawsuit states. “Congress, by law, named the center ‘John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.’ Under our constitutional system, only Congress can change a law, and Congress must do so by enacting a new law.”

“Congress did not rename the Kennedy Center,” he continued. “Instead, Defendants knowingly break the law to satisfy Defendant Trump’s vanity.”
