Households urged to stockpile sand this November | UK | News

Severe storms will hit the UK this weekend as Storm Claudia brings rain, wind and disruption.

But whether or not this storm affects you where you live, it looks like cold, wet November weather is finally on its way after an unseasonably warm start.

Insurance experts are now urging households to prepare for wet weather by stocking up on sand, among other important preparations.

According to MoneySuperMarket insurance expert Kara Gammell, one in five UK homes are at risk of flooding this winter; This means approximately 6.3 million properties.

He urged households to be prepared by purchasing sandbags and checking if drains are blocked.

He said: “A common misconception is that your home is only at risk of flooding if you live by water, when in fact 6.3 million properties in England are at risk of flooding – a figure expected to rise to 8 million by 2025. With the value of weather-related home damage set to reach £573 million in 2024, the financial cost could be life-changing if you are uninsured.

“Stock up on sand – consider investing in sandbags, they are old school but a very effective tool for controlling water flow during floods, especially if you are in a flood prone area.

“Clear the way – clogged drains are the main cause of surface water flooding. Clear fallen leaves, moss and debris from drains and gutters to prevent blockages that can cause water damage and lead to potential denied claims due to lack of maintenance.

“Be quick – take photos of your home and garden when they are in good condition. This can serve as evidence against weather-related disputes later. You can also keep a simple home maintenance diary to show that you are taking steps to maintain your property.

“Look for signs; inspect ceilings, walls and attics for early signs of water or moisture. Fixing minor problems now can prevent larger damage later.

“Check the exterior of your home; it’s best to inspect the condition of your walls and roof regularly. Check for missing shingles, cracks, or other places where water could seep into your home.”

“MoneySuperMarket data shows that average home insurance premiums for properties that experienced flooding before taking out insurance are twice that of properties that have never experienced flooding, so if you’re looking for home insurance, make sure you compare policies to find the right cover for your home at the best value.

“Although flood insurance is included in most home insurance policies, it can increase the cost of your policy if your home is determined to be at high risk of flooding.”

Meteorology issued a rare yellow weather warning for today (Friday) due to Storm Claudia, warning of heavy rain. The statement said: “Storm Claudia, previously named by the Spanish Meteorological Office, will bring persistent and heavy rain on Friday.

“40-60mm of rain is widely expected across this region, with around 80mm expected in some places, with higher accumulations more likely in the East Midlands and on higher ground in Wales and Western England. Impacts may be worsened by strong easterly winds as well as thunderstorms later in the afternoon and evening on Friday.”
