Over 2.83 lakh cases of dog bites in Bihar in 2024-25: Economic Survey report

The latest economic survey report for 2025-26 released on February 2 showed that as many as 776 people fell victim to stray dog bites in Bihar.
According to the report, more than 2.83 lakh dog bite cases were reported across the state in 2024-25; this is approximately 38,900 more than the previous year.
According to the report released by the Bihar government during the ongoing Budget Session of the State Assembly on February 2, 2026, the highest number of dog bite cases occur in Patna, followed by Nalanda, Bhojpur, East and West Champaran, Jehanabad, Gaya, Gopalganj, Vaishali, Purnia.
. The report stated that the number of dog bite cases in 2023-24 was 2 million 44 thousand 367. With 29,280 cases, Patna was the city with the highest number of dog bite cases in 2025-26, followed by East Champaran (24,452), Nalanda (19,637), West Champaran (17,820), Jehanabad (12,900), Bhojpur (10,496), Gaya (10,794), Purnia (10,373), Vaishali. (10,155).
Aurangabad district has the lowest number of dog bite cases with only 467 cases in 2025-26, followed by Arwal (1,207), Khagaria (1,565), Lakhisarai (1,696), Supaul (1,878), Rohtas (1,967), Banka (2,782), Buxar (2.8 95).
Similarly, the survey report stated that Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) or Influenza Like Illness (ILI) was the second most common disease with 31,025 cases in 2025-26, followed by diseases such as Malaria (29,198), Enteric Fever (Typhoid) (23,976), Bacillary Dysentery (19,929), Acute Diarrheal Disease (inclusive). acute gastroenteritis) (18128) and Viral Hepatitis (1208).
Patna-based animal activist Arpita Bose said stray dogs or cats bite only out of fear or when they are unnecessarily attacked or provoked. He said the number of dog bite cases this year was very high.
Amresh Kumar, a veterinary doctor in Kankerbagh district, said he treats injured stray dogs and cats with passion and kindness. “I can’t stand to see them suffer,” he said. However, he refused to make any comment on the number of dog bite cases in the state. “What can I say about this?” he asked.
