Thailand, Cambodia Agree To Renew Ceasefire After Deadly Border Clashes, Says Trump | World News

Following a week of deadly border clashes that have left at least 20 people dead and nearly half a million displaced, US President Donald Trump announced on Friday (local time) that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed once again to immediately renew the ceasefire agreement, crediting his personal intervention in the agreement as well as the assistance of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

In his post on the social media platform Truth Social, the US President stated that he had a “very nice” meeting with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, and that both leaders agreed to “effectively stop all attacks this evening.”

He noted that both leaders agreed to have Trump and Ibrahim return as witnesses to the “original Peace Agreement” signed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in October.

“This morning I had a very nice meeting with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet regarding the unfortunate reawakening of their long-standing War. This evening they agreed to effectively STOP all shooting and return to the original Peace Treaty with me and them with the help of Malaysian Grand Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim,” his post said.

Trump also described the roadside bomb incident that triggered the latest violence as an accident but acknowledged Thailand’s strong retaliation and hailed the revival of peace ties as a major diplomatic success.

Trump’s post added: “The roadside bomb that killed and injured numerous Thai soldiers was an accident, but Thailand still retaliated very strongly. Both countries are ready for PEACE and maintain Commerce with the United States. It is an Honor to work with Anutin and Hun in resolving what could otherwise escalate into a major War between two great and prosperous Countries! I would also like to thank Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his assistance on this very important matter.”

New clashes between the two sides began earlier this week, when Thailand launched an airstrike on military positions in Cambodia on Monday morning after Cambodian shelling killed one Thai soldier and injured several others in the tense border region, the Bangkok Post reported.

According to the Royal Thai Army, Cambodian forces fired artillery shells and rockets at Thai military and civilian areas in the Chong Bok district of Nam Yuen province at around 07:00 in the morning. One Thai soldier died and four soldiers were injured in the attack.

According to the Bangkok Post, Major General Winthai Suvaree said that Thai troops returned fire and then hit locations in Cambodia with warplanes to stop the incoming attacks.
