Sydney Sweeney’s furious fans call her a ‘hypocrite’ for complaining about objectification in sheer gown
Sydney Sweeney fans are turning on her after she said she felt judged in Hollywood while wearing a low-cut, see-through dress on stage.
The backlash began after the 28-year-old Euphoria star gave a sensitive speech about resilience, identity and being slighted in the industry during Variety’s Power of Women event held at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Wednesday.
‘I’m not a fighter in the ring, but I know something of myself in the ring’ [Christy Martin]Sweeney said when discussing his upcoming role as the trailblazing boxer in his upcoming film Christy.
The actress said Martin’s story, as a gay woman victimized by her husband and trainer in male-dominated boxing, resonated deeply with her.
‘I know what it feels like to be underestimated, to have people define you before you have a chance to define yourself. I know what it feels like to prove that you deserve to be here, to be seen, to be taken seriously,’ Sweeney said.
‘But we each have our own struggles, and Christy reminds us that sometimes strength isn’t visible out loud, sometimes it’s all about getting back up again and again, no matter who is watching.’
While Sweeney’s speech received applause in the hall, online reactions were much more brutal; many accused the actress of contradicting her own message about objectification by wearing a see-through dress that completely exposed her breasts.

Another wrote: ‘After saying she didn’t like how people described her, she showed up to an event wearing a see-through dress, revealing her breasts, and proved people were right in describing her.’
She’s literally on the Women’s Power runway talking about being underestimated while wearing a dress that shows off her body more than her message. ‘How are we supposed to focus on her words when the first thing presented is her breast?’ a third asked.
They continued: ‘I’m not shaming him, but this is the wrong environment. This event is expected to honor strength, toughness, and leadership to not play a role in the visual objectification that women have been fighting against for decades. We deserve better representation of empowerment. ‘That’s not him.’
One critic claimed that the more they watched the speech, the ‘more ridiculous’ it seemed.
‘You are taken lightly, defined by others, you have to prove your existence… Girl, you are not an outcast. ‘You are a famous actor with Aryan characteristics who has never been discriminated against,’ they mocked.
Others said Sweeney’s ‘dress-clad speech’ was a ‘joke’.

Another commented: ‘Wow the hate comments here are crazy. Spread good vibes to people. There’s enough hate in the world.’
The two-time Emmy nominee made sure all eyes were on her as she arrived in a figure-hugging, silver mesh gown that left little to the imagination.

The dress, a collaboration between Christian Cowan, 29, and emerging designer Elias Matso, 23, covered Sweeney’s curves and hugged her like a wrung-out towel, revealing the star’s tiny waist.
The dress is made of crystal mesh embroidered onto a steel-boned bodice to create a sculptural form of a classic hourglass waist.
While attending the Variety Power of Women: Los Angeles event, Sweeney returned to Hollywood goodwill by hugging and kissing celebs like Sharon Stone and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Earlier this year, he appeared to have fallen out of favor with his fellow stars due to the controversies he’s faced recently, from his divisive American Eagle campaign to his status as a registered Republican.
