How much are people really spending on Christmas gifts this year? | News

Christmas shopping continues, but ideas about how much it is acceptable to spend on gifts have changed, with prices rising.

Gift-giving is adding significantly to Christmas budgets, with Brits expected to spend an average of £181.07 on gifts for loved ones this year, according to MoneySuperMarket.

Despite the figures, UK households have cut Christmas spending at the fastest rate in almost a decade.

Data from Barclays shows card spending fell 1.1 per cent in November compared to the same period last year as people dealt with uncertainty ahead of the Budget.

Inflation remains high and families struggle with cost pressure from household bills throughout the year.

Independent asked the public how much they actually spent on gifts this year.
