The Pentagon’s latest set of declassified UFO files includes audio recordings of astronauts at the Apollo 12 post-mission medical briefing in 1969 describing seeing “streaks of light” while trying to sleep in deep space.
The audio, released as part of the second tranche of recordings under the War Department’s Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters, or PURSUE, captures the Apollo 12 crew discussing the flashes and streaks of light they saw on the darkened spacecraft.
“The lines I saw were the lines I saw horizontally,” one crew member said, according to the transcript. “The horizontal lines were always slightly above center.”

The War Department said this release was a government-wide effort to identify, review, declassify and make publicly available unsolved records and historical documents related to the UAP. The first release was on May 8.
The Apollo 12 crew, including Charles “Pete” Conrad, Richard Gordon, and Alan Bean, embarked on NASA’s second crewed lunar landing mission in November 1969.
Newly released briefing audio offers an explanation for unexplained visual flashes seen by astronauts.

In the transcript, the astronauts describe watching the flashes while lying awake in the spacecraft. One said the lines appeared to be “roughly in the same place,” while another said he saw them “about 30 degrees horizontally.”

The crew and medical staff also discussed whether the flashes of light were random or unidirectional and whether they occurred in one eye or both. One astronaut said he could usually tell which eye was registering the flash after waiting long enough to observe.
It was discussed in the briefing that this phenomenon was probably due to cosmic rays or heavy particles passing through the eye.

The audio from Apollo 12 is one of several recordings included in the latest release.
Other files in my slice include Cold War-era records about “green fireballs” near sensitive military and nuclear facilities, Pantex footage of an unidentified object, and a senior U.S. intelligence official describing orange orbs during a helicopter mission.
The War Department says the PURSUE archive contains unsolved cases, which means the government has not made a definitive determination about the nature of the observed event.

The ministry said the materials will be released on an ongoing basis as records are located, reviewed and declassified.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said, “The War Department is aligning with President Trump to provide unprecedented transparency about our government’s understanding of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena. Hidden behind classifications, these files have long fueled justified speculation—and now it’s time for the American people to see it with their own eyes.” he said. “This release of declassified documents demonstrates the Trump Administration’s serious commitment to unprecedented transparency.”
