“Regency Road northbound on the North South Highway is closed while emergency services respond to the fire,” South Australian police said in a statement.

Drivers were asked to be careful as dense black smoke negatively affected visibility.

More than 80 firefighters are on the scene, some riding cranes to fight the fire from above.

The smoke, which smelled of plastic and carried ash, was visible from the surrounding suburbs and spread to nearby businesses, including a Dial a Curry restaurant and a solar panel store.
