Hugh Morris: Ex-England and Glamorgan batter and ECB chief executive dies

Former England and Glamorgan player and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chairman Hugh Morris has died at the age of 62.

He was diagnosed with bowel cancer in January 2022 and, after returning to work later that year, left his role as Glamorgan CEO in September 2023 to spend time with his family while he received treatment.

A prolific opening batsman, Morris had two spells as Glamorgan captain and led the county to the Sunday League title in 1993.

He also played three times for England and captained England A on tours to South Africa, the West Indies and Sri Lanka.

After retiring, Galli held various senior positions at the ECB for 16 years.

As chief executive he oversaw a hugely successful period for the England men’s Test team, which won three consecutive Ashes series.

Morris returned to Wales as chief executive of Glamorgan and spent nine years in his hometown, helping to reduce debts and ensure Sophia Gardens became the home of a Hundred franchise with Welsh Fire at their Cardiff ground.
