While discussing the “evolving situation” in Iran late on Wednesday evening, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar received a call from Iranian foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi. In his post about X, Jaishankar wrote: “I received a call from Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi. We discussed the developing situation in and around Iran.” The meeting took place shortly after New Delhi issued another advisory to Indian citizens against travel to Iran due to ongoing deadly protests in the country.
On Wednesday, the Indian government issued an advisory to its citizens: “Given the ongoing developments in Iran, Indian citizens are once again strongly advised to avoid travel to the Islamic Republic of Iran until further notice.” Earlier this month, India had issued a similar advisory telling its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Iran until further notice due to the protests.
Iran protests
Iran is witnessing deadly protests that have spread across many of its cities, reportedly killing thousands of people and flaring up tensions across the region. The United States also advised its citizens to leave Iran and asked them to consider crossing from the country to Armenia or Türkiye by land. “Protests across Iran are increasing and could turn violent, resulting in arrests and injuries. Increased security measures, road closures, public transportation disruptions, and internet blocking continue. The Government of Iran has restricted access to mobile, landline, and national internet networks. Airlines continue to limit or cancel flights to and from Iran, suspending various services through Friday, January 16,” a security alert issued by the virtual U.S. embassy in Iran said.
