Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said Friday that he has ordered the “complete and immediate cancellation” of all War Department posts at universities including Princeton, Columbia, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Brown and Yale, starting in the 2026-27 academic year.
Hegseth stated that the ban would include “many people” and claimed that the higher education system was “poisoned from within by the so-called elite class of universities who abuse their privilege and access to this department and completely betray their purpose.”
Hegseth’s announcement comes after he similarly earlier this month banned active-duty service members from attending Harvard starting next year.
He accused the universities of decades of “a trust fund of American taxpayer dollars, but have become factories of anti-American resentment and military disdain.”

He claimed that universities had replaced “the study of triumph and pragmatic realism with the promotion of vigilance and weakness.”
“This is not education, this is brainwashing,” he added.

“The War Department has stopped supporting our corruption in the uniformed class,” he said. “We are tired of paying for the privilege of having our future leaders taught the evil ideologies of our enemies. Enough is enough.”

“We cannot and will not send our most talented officers, our senior officers, to graduate programs that undermine the values they are sworn to uphold.”

Hegseth added that the department would hold itself accountable, starting with a top-to-bottom review of our own civil war colleges “to ensure that they are once again bastions of strategic thought and fully dedicated to the single mission of developing the most lethal and effective leaders and warfighters the world has ever known.”
