Hyderabad: Plastic Recycling Campaign Launched

Hyderabad: Members of PlastIndia 2026 and Telangana and Andhra Plastic Manufacturers Association (TAAPMA) flagged off the Swachhata Yatra at T-Hub in Hyderabad on Sunday. The mobile campaign aims to raise awareness about plastic sustainability.

The initiative, organized by Switcheko, involves a specially designed truck equipped with a plastic compressor and incinerator. The unit will travel across the country to demonstrate how plastic waste can be responsibly managed and scientifically recycled.

Designed and manufactured in Telangana, the unit will be first exhibited at various venues in the city during the International Kite Festival. It will then travel to New Delhi via Medak, Kamareddy, Adilabad, Nagpur, Bhopal and Agra, collecting and processing plastic waste along the way.

Speaking at the launch, PlastIndia 2026 start-up committee member Rohit Kanugo announced that the fair will also host the Bharat Next Challenge. This competition invites students and start-ups to submit innovative ideas on sustainability and plastic recycling. The winners will receive a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh and potential funding of up to Rs 1.5 billion from IIM-Calcutta to further develop their projects.

Safe disposal of e-waste from today

An e-waste sanitation drive will be carried out within GHMC limits on Monday and Tuesday and temporary e-waste collection centers will be planned in each ward for the convenience of the public.

Announcements regarding safe disposal of e-waste were made in many colonies on Sunday. GHMC staff visited homes to spread awareness with flexible banners. Automobiles have also moved between colonies, announcing a two-day trip, but it is not yet known whether the pickup vehicles will visit every colony during the campaign.

The initiative aims to raise public awareness about the importance of proper electronic waste management, while ensuring the systematic collection and scientific processing of e-waste in residential, commercial and public spaces.

“We have informed the residents that we will collect refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, computers, mobile phones, televisions, batteries, UPS systems, power banks and other electronic gadgets,” said a GHMC official.

He added that sanitation personnel along with women from Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have launched awareness campaigns to sensitize citizens on responsible e-waste disposal.
