Three people were arrested for allegedly beating a 70-year-old woman by tying her to a tree due to a land dispute in Kaveripattinam. The incident came to light when the video showing the attack was published on social media and the police intervened.
The victim, 70-year-old Unnamalai, wife of late Urumasettty, was a resident of Attupalan Kottai near Thevarmukkulam in Kaveripattinam. He lived with his two married sons. The family had a long-standing land dispute with a relative of Urumasetty’s brother Balakrishnan over an adjoining land parcel.
On Sunday, January 4, 2026, Balakrishnan’s 53-year-old son Kumar, his 45-year-old wife Kalpana and several other relatives began unilaterally clearing and plowing the disputed land.
Unnamalai, who was home alone at the time, objected to this, stating that the matter was at the litigation stage. At that time, Kumar and Kalpana caught Unnamalai, tied her to a tree and started slapping her, the alleged visuals of the incident showed.
Unnamalai’s relative, a local BJP functionary who tried to intervene, was also attacked. The defendant then untied him. Based on the video evidence, Unnamalai and her family filed a complaint with the police. Kumar, Kalpana, their relatives and the third accused Prabhakaran were arrested.
