“For example, if a row of boats, with their masts and rigging, interrupted the view of the Sydney Opera House, the Opera House would be visible in the background… but the view would be significantly reduced.”

Sydney firm Micheal Fountain Architects launched Land and Environment Court proceedings against Hunters Hill Council last year, asking the court to green light the marina expansion.

“The closest island to the proposal area is Cockatoo Island, located 250 meters to the south,” Beasley said.

“The island is recognized as having UNESCO World Heritage significance and is on the National Heritage List for its history as a penal institution for convicts who reoffended in the colonies between 1839-69.”

Spectacle Island, approximately 500 meters southwest of the proposal site, is a functioning base of the Royal Australian Navy. It has Commonwealth heritage protections.

Beasley said:[from] Public domain of Kelly’s Bush foreshore and foreshore locations in the Horse Paddock [park]“There is a significant obstruction to the views of both Kakadu and the Show Islands.”

It concluded that the visual effects of the proposal were “sufficient to warrant refusal of consent.”

“The feeling of being an island in the harbor is significantly reduced due to the obstruction of visibility.”

The group of Save Our Coast residents brought together more than 900 signatories opposing the proposal.

“Your support proves that our public spaces are, and always should be, for the benefit and enjoyment of all, not just the few,” he told supporters on Friday.
