Tragedy as body of woman, 20, pulled from UK river | UK | News

Tragedy struck in County Durham on Saturday afternoon (November 15) after the body of a young woman was found in the River Tees at Barnard Castle. Multiple emergency services were called to the Lartington Lane area at 2pm following reports of concerns for a kayaker having difficulty in the water.

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, North East Ambulance Service, Great Northern Air Ambulance Service, Coastguard and Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team were involved in the search. A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: “We were called just before 2pm to concerns about a kayaker in distress on the river. A number of emergency services were involved in the search but unfortunately the body of a 20-year-old woman was located just after 4pm.” They added that his family had been informed and supported by specialist police.

“We dispatched two ambulance crews, a clinical team leader, an officer and three teams from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and requested support from the mountain rescue team and our colleagues at the Great Northern Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS), who attended by land and air.”

Photos taken from the scene late on Saturday evening showed a massive 999 crew presence, with two ambulances, two cars, a large police van and four fire engines parked along the road. Northern Echo reported.
