‘I couldn’t believe what I saw’

A brown bear was spotted on a trail camera in Lithuania, and it didn’t just get great results imagesbut it also raises hope for the future of the species in this region.
By the way Photographer Marek Kislovskij set up some trail cameras on LRT.lt just to observe nature. On March 31, surprisingly, one of these cameras in a forest near the Belarusian border captured the brown bear wandering.
“When I came to check the camera, at first I couldn’t believe what I saw,” Kislovskij told LRT.It. “I was really surprised to capture such a shot and of course I was very excited.”
He added that it was a bit disturbing to know that he was in the same area as the bear, and found it even more interesting that no bear signs or tracks had previously been noticed in the Šalčininkai area where the animal was spotted.
The increasing number of bear sightings in Lithuania over the last few years is a good sign. One article The Guardian article explored how hunters in this country refuse to kill the animals because their declining populations are well known.
“[Brown bears] It became extinct in Lithuania in the 19th century as a result of hunting and habitat loss,” the article explains.
Not only is spotting an extinct or endangered species a spectacular sight for animal lovers, but the return of a native species is often a good sign that the health of a particular ecosystem is improving.
Trail cameras like Kislovskij’s are key to documenting endangered or hard-to-find species; This can help scientists develop conservation methods to protect them. Other footage includes a bobcat sighting in Colorado and a New Britain goshawk documented in Papua New Guinea for the first time in more than 50 years.
When native species thrive, everyone thrives. Native plants keep pollinators happy and native species up and down the food chain maintain populations; ensures that our food supply, water quality and the world are aligned.
Now that the brown bear has reestablished its home in Lithuania, it’s only a matter of time before we see what else is growing in the wild.
